SportMatchNUS: Connecting NUS Sports Enthusiasts, One Match at a Time

Project duration: August 2022 - January 2023

Team:

  • Lead: Aaron L H Chan, Master of Computing - General Track

  • Xiao Dong Yan, Master of Computing - General Track

Project Overview:

The primary goal of this project was to develop an engaging and user-friendly web application to facilitate the connection of sports players and fosters a vibrant community of sports enthusiasts for students and staff at NUS. By implementing SportsMatchNUS, the team hoped  to enhance the sports culture at NUS by making it easy for sports enthusiasts to find and connect with like-minded individuals, thus promoting a sense of camaraderie, personal growth, and physical well-being.

Why the team applied for CCSGP Fellowship:

As an avid sports enthusiast, Aaron often faced challenges in organizing sports games with others, particularly for games in basketball, tennis, and badminton. The Covid-19 pandemic further exacerbated this challenge of finding suitable sports partners, particularly during hectic academic periods. However, Aaron discovered that many others faced similar obstacles, primarily due to the absence of a unified platform to establish groups for various sports. Even with accessible courts and facilities on campus, organizing a game remained a cumbersome process, often necessitating the search for niche interest groups on various platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, and sport-specific apps.  Driven by this personal necessity, Aaron collaborated with groupmate Xiao Dong Yan to develop an initial prototype during the IT5007 module on Software Engineering on Application Architecture. Eager to further refine his skills and address this issue, Aaron seized the opportunity to create a comprehensive app by applying for support from the CCSGP Public Service Fellowship.

About the Project:

SportMatchNUS is a comprehensive web application designed to streamline the process of organizing and participating in sports activities within the NUS campus. At the core of the app is a user-friendly booking table, which enables users to create new games and join existing ones with ease, while providing the ability to view all their upcoming games’ information all in one place. Integrated with an interactive map, users can conveniently view the locations of available courts for various sports across the campus.

Since users have different preferences and schedules, the app provides user-friendly filtering capabilities to allow users to narrow down game options based on location, date, time, sport, and skill-level. This ensures that users can find the perfect match for their interests and abilities, creating an inclusive and enjoyable sporting experience for everyone involved.

SportMatchNUS aims to promote a vibrant sports community on campus by simplifying the process of connecting like-minded individuals and fostering an environment where users can grow, learn, and share their passion for sports.
